Revolution in Brussels urban planning: Good Living

The new rules will impact the creation and regularization of housing in the Belgian capital from 2023, with entry into force scheduled for the first half of 2024.

Brussels, 29/02/2024.

Brussels' urban landscape is about to undergo a major transformation with the imminent arrival of an innovative regional urban planning regulation: the "Good Living". Adopted by the Government of the Brussels-Capital Region in July 2022, this regulation aims to redefine standards of habitability for housing in the capital.

MAJOR CHANGES AFFECTING THE CREATION AND REGULARIZATION OF HOUSING UNITS

The "Good Living"is designed to bring about significant changes in standards of habitability, with the emphasis on a quality living environment. These changes will have major consequences for people seeking to create or regularize a dwelling.

Notably, the "Good Living" revises upwards existing standards, such as living areas, ceiling heights and natural lighting, compared with the current RRU.

The creation or regularization of a dwelling in an existing building proves to be a major challenge, due to various obligations such as the need to create interior and exterior spaces specifically dedicated to bicycles, to guarantee optimal acoustic insulation, as well as to comply with numerous standards based on complex criteria.
